What to expect when you visit an osteopath…
When you first visit, the osteopath will take a full case history and carry out an examination. You will normally be asked to remove some clothing, if appropriate, and carry out a series of simple movements. This will be followed by a "hands on" examination, which is the osteopaths’ main tool to identify any point of restriction or excessive strain in the body. Additional investigations, such as x-rays, blood or urine tests may be required to allow a full diagnosis before a suitable treatment plan specific for you can be agreed. Treatment is geared to your specific needs and some indication of the number of treatments required should be possible after the first visit. Simple acute conditions may only need one or two. Chronic conditions however may need more, with ongoing maintenance to keep the condition minimised.
